Understanding the Google Heat Map

In 2007, researchers at Cornell University, my alma mater, conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of the Google Search Engine Results page, or SERP and in the process developed the Google Heat Map. Their strategy was very clever.

The Cornell University researchers fitted volunteer subjects with goggles similar to those used in fighter aircraft. These goggles track the subject’s eye position by watching the subject’s eye motion. The Cornell researchers recorded: a) the position that the subject looked at on the computer screen and b) the amount of time the subject spent looking at a given position.

The researchers then compiled all of the time and position data and created a “Heat Map”. The heat map ranks the time & position information into ten color bands. The Heat Map displays all of the data simultaneously.

By looking at the Google Heat Map, one can see that the following results were discovered:

1) right hand column of the Google Heat Map Page, Pay Per Click Ads gets about 10% to 15% viewing by the visitor subjects.

2) Banner Ads positioned at the top of the Google Heat Map Page also, get about 10% to 15% viewing by the visitor subjects.

3) In the Organic or Natural Search, position one, two and three get the most viewing by the visitor subjects.

Careful review of the data shows the following results:

The bar graph to the left shows that on average, position 1 of the Natural Search gets about 42% of the free visitor traffic.

Position number 2 gets about 12% of the free traffic, and position number three gets about 8% of the free visitor traffic. The trend continues downward as one might expect.

Similar studies conducted on the private network AOL, showed similar results.

1. go to
2. choose your feed
3. click on the feedburner logo in the upper right hand corner which will take you to the feedburner dashboard as shown to the left here.
4. click on “Publicize” tab
5. click on “Email Subscriptions in the left hand column
6. click on “Activate button, bottom center
7. relax, your feedburner subscription by email is enabled.
8. test that your email subscription is enabled by subscribing using your email address. You should receive an email from your feed. You can view the email and delete it, or sign up for your feed, your choice.

Understanding Google Page Rank

There are two (2) kinds of Google Page Rank. The first is the rank of a website on the Search Engine Results page (SERP). This Page Rank is not what is meant by Google Page Rank. The second type of Google Page Rank is the value of the a website ascribed by Google to every website.


The Page Rank (PR) or PR, is the system, developed by Google co-founder Larry Page. The original algorythm is patented and the patent is assigned to Stanford University. Stanford received 1.8 million shares of Google stock for the use of the patent. Standford sold the Google stock in 2005 for $336 million dollars. Google has Trademarked the term Page Rank.

The PR is calculated using many factors. The algorithm considers how people search and follow links. Google considers two possible scenarios: 1) random surfer model, and 2) the intentional surfer model. The calculation has been weakened by spamming and no-follow links which serve to skew the data. Absent these factors, Page Rank could be used as a quality index for a website.


However, surfer behavior is more complicated and less than 100% predictable, so Page Rank is not a true indicator of website quality. The Page Rank is derived by noting the PR of the websites that point to a website in addition to noting the PR of the websites that a website links out to.


In addition, Google suggests that it considers over 200 hundred other factors when computing Page Rank. The Search Engine Result Page (SERP) rank of a page, which determines a page’s actual placement in the search results is based on the random surfer model (Page Rank) and the intentional surfer model (browsing habits of users) in addition to other factors.


In the early days of Page Rank, this number was easily manipulated by redirecting a low Page Rank page to a High Page Rank page. This caused the low Page Rank page to acquire the Page Rank of the High Page Rank page. Google has since made adjustments to prevent this anomaly in the algorithm.


Google may be moving away from Page Rank. The Google Chrome toolbar does not make use of the Page Rank. Google has indicated that no-follow and other strategies are causing Page Rank to become depreciated and not used.


What Google does utilize is the number and quality of back links to a website. High quality back links and lots of them is what drives SERP page placement. This is the true measure of where your website ranks on the SERP. Therefore a winning strategy is to develop numerous high quality back links to your website to move your website up the SERP page. And don’t get too concerned with the PR that Google assigns to your website, since Google may be moving away from this approach in the years ahead.
